چکیده

Late Miocene great ape crania are rare, mostly fragmentary, and the focus of much debate on great ape and human origins (Brown & Ward, 1988; Bonis et al., 1990; Moyà-Solà & Köhler, 1993, 1995; Begun, 1994; Kordos & Begun, 1997; Schwartz, 1997). Due to poor preservation, information on important features of cranial anatomy (facial angulation, prognathism, relative and absolute brain size) must be estimated from incomplete or reconstructed specimens. This has led to disagreement on the evolutionary history of hominid cranial morphology and contributes to uncertainty with regard to the origin and composition of the clades of living hominids (pongines and hominines). In this preliminary communication we report on the discovery of a new cranium of Dryopithecus brancoi from Rudabánya, Hungary. It is the most complete cranium of this taxon ever recovered. The specimen, RUD 197–200, includes a nearly complete dentition and, for the first time in Dryopithecus, a neurocranium with a complete glabella to inion chord with direct bony contact to the maxilla. Standard anatomical landmarks are lacking, preventing unambiguous measurement of facial hafting, and the neurocranium is not complete

Dryopithecus crusafonti sp. nov., a New Miocene Hominoid Species From Can Ponsic (Northeastern Spain)

Reanalysis of the sample of Miocene Hominoidea from Spain, together with the entire sample of European Miocene Hominoidea, has revealed a number of distinctive traits among the specimens from the early Vallesian locality of Can Ponsic (Crusafont and Hurzeler, 1969; Crusafont and Golpe, 1973; Hartenberger and Crusafont, 1979; Agusti et al., 1984,1985). The Can Ponsic sample, while sharing charac...

Preliminary report on a late Tortonian/Messinian balaenopterid cetacean (Mammalia, Mysticeti) from Sistan and Baluchestan Province (Iran)

In this study we present the first description of a mysticete skeleton from the late Tortonian to Messinian greyish-green marl of the Coastal Makran, south of Negour in Chahbahar County, Sistan and Baluchestan Province. This specimen is neither completely excavated, nor completely prepared, and therefore all our findings are preliminary. The identifiable components of this fossil thus far consi...

Sivapithecus is east and Dryopithecus is west, and never the twain shall meet

Sivapithecus and Dryopithecus are well-described Miocene hominids (great apes and humans), both known since the 19th century. Over the years these genera have been combined into one (Dryopithecus) or separated up to the subfamily level. Each have been dismissed as interesting side branches, hailed as direct ancestors, or recognized as sister clades to one or more clade of extant hominid. Here I...

Enamel thickness in the Middle Miocene great apes Anoiapithecus, Pierolapithecus and Dryopithecus.

On the basis of industrial computed tomography, relative enamel thickness (RET) is computed in three Middle Miocene (ca 11.9-11.8 Ma) hominoids from Abocador de Can Mata (Vallès-Penedès Basin, Catalonia, Spain): Pierolapithecus catalaunicus from BCV1 and Anoiapithecus brevirostris from C3-Aj, interpreted as stem hominids; and Dryopithecus fontani from C3-Ae of uncertain phylogenetic affinities....
